Quartz Cuvettes

Fused-silica (JGS1) cells for UV-Vis and near-IR spectrophotometry — standard 10 mm path, micro to macro volumes, factory-direct.

Quartz Cuvettes for UV-Vis Spectrophotometry

Scuvette manufactures a complete range of quartz cuvettes from Japanese-imported JGS1 fused silica using optical-contact, one-piece molding. The result is >83% transmittance across 190–2500 nm, so a single quartz cell covers the deep-UV, the full visible range and into the near-IR — something glass and plastic cells cannot do. Whether you need a standard 10 mm quartz cuvette, a reduced-volume micro cuvette, an ultra-low sub-micro cell, a sealed screw cap cuvette or a four-window fluorescence cuvette, every cell ships factory-direct with consistent, reproducible optical quality.

Quartz is the right material whenever your wavelength drops below ~350 nm. For visible-only work above 350 nm, glass cuvettes are a lower-cost alternative — read our quartz vs glass comparison to choose. Not sure which cell fits your instrument? Why choose fused silica (quartz)

Synthetic fused silica transmits from about 190 nm upward, where ordinary glass and most plastics are opaque. That makes quartz the only practical choice for UV measurements and for methods that span UV and visible in one run. Our cells use JGS1 grade for the broadest UV transmission; JGS grade comparison explains the differences between JGS1, JGS2 and JGS3 window materials.

Path lengths and volumes

The 10 mm (1 cm) path is the international spectrophotometry standard — molar extinction coefficients in the Beer-Lambert law are referenced to a 1 cm path, and virtually every cuvette holder assumes it. Beyond the standard, short-path cells (0.1–5 mm) suit high-concentration samples, while long-path cuvettes (20–100 mm) extend detection limits for dilute solutions. Reduced-volume micro and sub-micro cells handle microliter samples down to roughly 50 µL. See the path length guide for selection.

Quartz cuvette types for every sample

Quartz cuvettes for your spectrophotometer

Most benchtop UV-Vis instruments (Agilent, Shimadzu, PerkinElmer, Thermo, Hitachi, Jasco and others) accept a standard 10 mm cell in the sample compartment. If you want a fit check by model, see our quartz cuvettes for spectrophotometer guide. Send us your instrument model and we will confirm compatibility.

Choosing, care and custom orders

Where Quartz Cuvettes Are Used

Quartz Cuvettes — Frequently Asked Questions

What is a quartz cuvette and when should I use one?

A quartz cuvette is a small optical cell made from synthetic fused silica (JGS1) that transmits light from about 190 nm in the UV through the visible to roughly 2500 nm. Use quartz whenever your measurement reaches below ~350 nm, where ordinary glass and plastic cells block UV light. See the quartz vs glass comparison.

Are quartz cuvettes better than glass for UV-Vis?

For any wavelength below ~350 nm you need quartz — glass and most plastics are opaque to UV. Above 350 nm, glass cuvettes are a lower-cost choice for visible-range work. Quartz also covers the visible and near-IR, so one quartz cell serves both UV and Vis methods.

What path lengths do quartz cuvettes come in?

The 10 mm (1 cm) standard covers most assays, but quartz cells are available from 0.1 mm short-path cells for concentrated samples up to 100 mm long-path cells for dilute solutions. Micro and sub-micro cells add reduced-volume options down to ~50 µL. See the path length guide.

Can quartz cuvettes be used for fluorescence?

Yes, but fluorescence needs four polished windows (or black-walled cells) to suppress stray light and light leaks. Standard two-window UV-Vis cells are not ideal for fluorescence — use a dedicated fluorescence cuvette for emission measurements.

How do I clean and store a quartz cuvette?

Rinse immediately after use with deionized water and a mild detergent (or 1:1 HCl for organics), then isopropanol and air-dry. Never use abrasive tools on the optical faces. Check the full care protocol and solvent compatibility guide.

Do you offer custom or OEM quartz cuvettes?

Yes. We manufacture to spec — non-standard path lengths, reduced-volume or micro cells, special window grades (JGS1/JGS2/JGS3) and laser-engraved markings. Volume buyers can use our OEM service. Contact us or see OEM & custom options.
