A practical cleaning protocol for quartz cuvettes — rinsing, solvent steps, ultrasonic baths, drying and storage — plus what to avoid to keep optical windows scratch-free.
Never wipe a dry cuvette. Dust and particles act as abrasive grit — wiping a dry window scratches it. Always rinse before you touch the optical faces.
Ultrasonic baths are effective for glued (cemented) cells only when kept short and cool: 1–2 minutes in room-temperature mild detergent or water. Prolonged ultrasonic agitation can weaken the glue bond. For one-piece sintered or moulded cells, longer ultrasonic cycles are fine.

Store clean, dry cells in their plastic box, window surfaces protected, away from dust. For long-term storage, fill nothing — keep them dry and capped.

Yes. Ethanol, isopropanol and acetone are all safe on fused quartz for removing oils, dyes and organic residues. Rinse thoroughly with water afterwards. Avoid hydrofluoric acid (HF) and strong alkaline solutions, which etch quartz.
It is safe for one-piece, fully fused (sintered or moulded) quartz cells. Keep cycles short (1–2 minutes) in a mild detergent for glued/cemented two-piece cells, because long agitation can weaken the glue joint. Demountable cells should be disassembled and cleaned by hand.
Soak the cell 10–15 minutes in a mild detergent (0.5%) or dilute nitric acid, then rinse thoroughly and inspect under strong light. Repeat if streaks remain. For stubborn inorganic deposits, a dedicated laboratory cleaning solution works better than scrubbing, which scratches the windows.
Store them inverted or upright in a clean, dust-free cuvette holder or box. Keep optical windows protected from contact, avoid abrasive wipes, and keep cells dry. Do not stack cells or cap them while still wet.
