A quartz cuvette is a small optical cell made from synthetic fused silica (JGS1) that transmits light from about 190 nm in the UV through the visible to roughly 2500 nm. You need quartz whenever your measurement reaches below ~350 nm — ordinary glass and plastic cells block UV light. Compare quartz vs glass cuvettes.
The 10 mm path length is the international spectrophotometry standard because absorbance and molar extinction coefficients in the Beer-Lambert law (A = εcl) are referenced to a 1 cm path. Nearly all published methods and cuvette holders assume 10 mm. Read the path length guide.
Use quartz for UV (below ~350 nm) and for solvents that attack plastic; glass for visible-range work above 350 nm; disposable plastic for one-off visible colorimetric assays. See glass cuvettes and the full comparison.
Rinse immediately after use with deionized water and a mild detergent (or 1:1 HCl for organics), then isopropanol and air-dry. Never use abrasive tools inside the optical faces. Full care protocol.
