A ceramic crucible’s published temperature rating is only the starting point. Atmosphere, heating rate and handling habits all shift the real-world limit. This guide explains the numbers and the practices that keep your crucibles in service.
1. Service Temperature by Material

2. Why Atmosphere Changes the Limit
The same material can behave differently in air versus inert or reducing gas:
- Oxidizing (air) — alumina and magnesia are stable. Zirconia’s effective limit is lower in oxidizing service.
- Inert / reducing (argon, nitrogen, hydrogen) — where zirconia reaches its full 2300°C rating.
- Reactive atmospheres — fluoride or alkali vapours attack many ceramics; confirm compatibility before use.
3. Heating Rate & Thermal Shock
Most crucible failures are not from exceeding the temperature limit — they are from thermal shock. Ceramics expand when heated and contract when cooled; if that change happens too fast, the crucible cracks.
- Ramp gradually to your target temperature rather than plunging a cold crucible into a hot furnace.
- Cool slowly — let the furnace cool naturally; do not quench a hot crucible.
- Zirconia is sensitive near its transformation range — ramp slowly through it.
- Magnesia is the most thermal-shock sensitive — take extra care on heat-up and cool-down.
4. Pre-Heating & First Use
- Before first use, a gentle pre-heat drives off any adsorbed moisture and residual organics.
- Bring the crucible up in stages — a common practice is to hold briefly at a low temperature before ramping to the working temperature.
- For critical or high-purity work, condition the crucible with an empty firing cycle first.
5. Storage & Moisture
Ceramics can absorb moisture from humid air, and trapped water turning to steam on heat-up can crack the crucible.
- Store dry in a clean, dust-free environment.
- If a crucible has been stored a long time, dry it before use and pre-heat gradually.
- Avoid stacking heavy items on top of crucibles; chips and micro-cracks shorten life.
6. When to Retire a Crucible
- Visible cracks, crazing or spalling on the surface.
- Excessive glaze or discolouration that indicates a reaction with your melt.
- Loss of dimensional stability or a warped rim.
- When in doubt, replace — a failed crucible mid-run is far more expensive than a new one.
